The portal. In 300 years, you have dissipated. Your molecules have reassembled, settled themselves to rest in the moss, or tumble in rushing water. They’re the lichen on crumbling stone, a hinge in the exoskeletons of various wandering bugs, a hair follicle on an unfamiliar mammal. Your ghost is still here though, in some way, whistling on the wind and wafting through long-empty corridors of derelicht structures. The ghosts of others are here too, though they can’t remember what these hallways were for. They pass by and through each other as echoes in stillness when a gust picks up loose dirt. Ancient burn scars splay ornamental on what you and your fellow specters left behind—but your regretful cries have dissipated too, and reverberated instead into the strange songs of birds, mysterious in the sunrise. Maybe their melody holds your memory, recanting what’s been lost. Or maybe the fog, sifting thickly through your discarded detritus, doesn’t remember you at all. Every careful archway, each polished hall crumbles and will fade into oblivion, as the memory of you—your energy disseminated—becomes reabsorbed, reorganized. Scattered into strange forms, anew. You begin again.
